Every night after her supper, Sadie takes a nap, then goes out into the front yard to “guard the neighborhood” – her idea, not mine. She decided that’s her “working dog” duty. A week before Christmas, she got up from her nap one night, walked into the den between me and the TV, and gave me “the look,” which means, “I want something. Figure it out.”

Then she put her paw on my knee. “The paw” is what she does when something is serious and she wants to be sure I haven’t missed “the look.”

I headed toward the front door but she walked by me into the living room and stared at the Christmas tree, which I had forgotten to turn on, then gave me “the look.” “Okay,” I said and turned on the Christmas tree, then continued toward the front door. Sadie walked behind me back into the den and lay down to resume her nap. Wasn’t time to go out. Was time to light the tree.
