I order from Amazon a lot and we get frequent deliveries from UPS. The usual driver is a woman in the proverbial “big brown” truck, and because we’re at the end of the street, she backs all the way up into our driveway so she can just drive straight out after she drops off the package-du-jour.
Most of the time, Sadie alerts me the moment the truck reaches our driveway and we go out to meet it. The woman loves dogs and has really big bone-shaped treats, which, of course, endears her to Sadie.
One day I was busy in the back of the house when Sadie came to get my attention. By the time I got to the front of the house, I saw the truck exiting our driveway. I opened the side door to see what had been delivered. Sadie ran to the end of the driveway and turned her entire body to watch forlornly as her friend with treats drove out of our neighborhood.
Two pictures came immediately to mind: A child watching a missed ice cream truck disappear down the street, and – for some mature readers or old movie buffs – Brandon deWilde in the movie “Shane,” running after Alan Ladd and calling to him as he rode off into the sunset.
