“Chewy” was always conscious of how his size affected children, so he made sure when he met them that he was lower than their eye level, often lying down as they approached.
One evening during a dinner party at our home, a baby crawled across the living room floor toward the big furry one. Chewy got a disturbed look as he lay on the floor watching the infant get nearer and nearer. The closer the baby got, the more troubled the look became in Chewy’s eyes until he finally figured out how he could get lower than a crawling child.
He rolled over onto his back so his eyes were almost on the floor, and greeted the child with his gentle, outstretched paws as the baby reached for him.
